What is your definition of a beach? Is it a place where you sunbath in 70 degree weather? Or the one place where friends and family get together for a good camping trip?

The summer of 3rd grade, I and a lot of my friends and their families took a camping trip to Sandy beach, Oregon. It became kind of a tradition for us until we all entered middle school, by then everyone was too busy to go so we stopped it. Anyway, Sandy Beach is not the kind of beach like those in California which is right next door. It normally is 70 degrees and sunny 24/7 which is why we stayed in yurts instead of tents. On days when it was sunny we went down to the beach and built massive sand castles as tall as we were, back then I was probably about four feet tall. You might be debating over whether or not this is possible, and to answer that, yes we truly did build a sand castle that big, but had help from one of the dads who was a professional architect/engineer. He also helped us climb a really steep cliff which had a type of stone on top that we could engrave our names on.

This beach has had some movies that were filmed there like “Free willy” and “The Goonies.” I know this because there is a very familiar rock formation called Castle rock which is in several scenes in “Free Willy” and “The Goonies.” That was the first time I had ever seen an actual place where two famous movies were filmed.

Seaside and Newport Aquarium are both places I went for 8th grade field trips. Seaside is a town full of shops and a beach right beside it and Newport Aquarium has lots of cool marine life there. There are many other events but these are what make this trip the most memorable.

Don’t Give you’re 5 Year Old Scissors

By Fuller Schwab

One day, when I was 5, it was a nice and sunny outside. My mom and my sister were gardening. I accidentally stepped on one of her flowers and she put me inside. Once inside I sat down bored as can be and someone left scissors on the kitchen counter. I grabbed the scissors to see what they did and they were the same as the barbers in my TV show so I decided I was going to be a barber just like him or well at least try to “pretend” to be one. Well of course the cat comes up from the basement and sat down right next to me. Worst thing for a cat to do if a 5 year old is thinking about these things and aren’t they supposed to know when something is wrong. Well of course I started randomly snipping the cat’s hair as it tried to escape my grasp. Then the cat scraped my entire left arm. Then of course as a 5 year old I started crying for my mom then she comes running inside to see what happened. She looked at my now somewhat bloody arm and then the poor shaved cat clawing at the back door. My mom then locked me in my room and she let the cat out as I tried to understand what wrong I had done. That is why you don’t give you’re five year old scissors.

Have you never been white water rafting?  If you haven’t I highly recommend it.
On my first expedition of the school year here at SOAR we went white water rafting down the Ocoee River. At first I was a bit apprehensive about going on the river since I heard so much about how big the rapids were. But at the same time I was very excited to go. Going down the river as one of the most exciting and fun things I have done before. Half way down the Ocoee It started pouring rain which made it all the better in my eyes. We had an awesome river guide he gave me the chance to guide the raft then ride the bull which is sitting on the front of the raft going through a rapid which was one of the high lights of my first expedition.

DID I SURVIVE THE OCOEE RIVER WHEN WE WENT RAFTING?

The first thing we did when we went rafting on the Ocoee go to the rolling thunder rafting company. After that we got changed and then we got our paddles and pfds and helmets. Then we got on the bus and went to the starting point. When we got to the starting point the guides unload the rafts and we got with our guides. After that we got into the water and practices our strokes. Then we put the raft in the river. After that we went down the Ocoee. Whenever we went down a rapid I would get into the down position so I wouldn't fall out. I would also lean toward the boat when I thought I was going to fall out. It was also raining when we went down the Ocoee. There was also a car fire on the road that was near the river. The rafting trip only took about an hour and fifteen minutes. I thought I was go to fall out of the boat and get stuck under the boat, but I didn't fall out at all this time. The end
